In his time, Theodore Kirchner was lauded as an expert composer and pianist. Already a noted organist at age eight, he went on to a career fostered by the support of such greats as Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms, Liszt, Wagner and Grieg. Although he died crippled and blind (he would have been bankrupted by his notorious gambling habit if not for the generosity of his friends), he left a remarkable musical legacy, including over 1,000 compositions for piano.
The works included on this disc rarely appear on concert programs. They are, however, wonderful samples of the Kirchner style. He preferred to work in short forms, creating miniature marvels of nuance and color. His moods tend toward the somber, sometimes barely avoiding the
