Notes and Editorial Reviews

Lute virtuoso, Paul O'Dette has been called "the clearest case of genius ever to touch his instrument" (Toronto Globe & Mail). One of the most influential figures in his field, Paul Odette has helped infuse the performance practice movement with a perfect combination of historical awareness, idiomatic accuracy and musical self-expression. This varied selection of award-winning recordings illustrates his multifaceted artistry.

R E V I E W S:

Every few years it seems the CD catalog is enriched by a new set of performances of Bach lute works, and in this latest project, the much-admired virtuoso Paul O'Dette offers his own (quite successful!) resolutions to issues concerning Bach's intentions regarding
Read more performance--as written, most of Bach's scores are not wholly playable on the standard 18th-century 13-course lute. Even beginning in Bach's time and continuing to the present lutenists have produced various alternative transcriptions, revoicings, and transpositions, and O'Dette has chosen thoughtful, creative solutions (opting for Hopkinson Smith's suggested A minor transposition of the G minor suite, for instance), maintaining idiomatic textures while employing fingerings that allow remarkable fluidity, continuity of contrapuntal lines, and unobtrusive register shifts... The lute's usual quick sound-decay is not really an issue here due to the very resonant venue... [E]ach note sounded so clearly, the chords ringing fully and warmly, and with no extraneous noises or performance artifacts. After a few minutes I was fully engrossed in the music and happily enveloped in the sound... Bravo!

----------------------------------

However much lute and chitarrone music you may have heard, it will leave you unprepared for what Kapsperger offers: his studious avoidance of cliches leads him into some astonishing rhythmic and harmonic adventures, and his technical innovations are calculated to give a hard time to any but the most proficient of players—this must be said since O'Dette's performances give no hint of it. In his concise and splendidly informative annotation, O'Dette refers to the bitter criticism Kapsperger attracted in his own time and, given the audaciously non-conformist character of his music—and, perhaps even more unforgivably, his impish sense of humour—it is little wonder; today we may more properly be grateful for it... The quality of both performances and recording is exceedingly difficult to fault.

-- John Duarte, Gramophone [6/1991, reviewing the Kapsbergesr works, also available as HM 507020]

...[H]ighly accomplished... O'Dette's treatment of the pavans and A Dream (P75) is...little more spacious, as is his delivery of Farwell (P3)... O'Dette [has a] squeaky clean and effortless delivery... [H]is set represents a considerable achievement that will be warmly welcomed by lovers of this music.

----------------------------------

You have to listen very closely to fully appreciate how difficult these pieces are to perform: lutenist Paul O’Dette just makes them sound so easy! In fact, according to O’Dette’s own articulate and informative notes, these lute works by Italian composer Simone Molinaro (c.1570-1634) are “among the most challenging ever written for the instrument.” And he does it not with wildly florid, obvious virtuoso show-off stuff, but rather with intricately constructed imitative counterpoint (in the manner of vocal ensemble music of the period) and fully developed lines in both inner and outer voices of multi-part works. He also sticks to fairly conventional harmony, albeit allied with provocative rhythms and singable, well-made melodies. O’Dette makes the most of this program of 26 pieces (several are by Molinaro’s teacher Giovanni Battista dalla Gostena), all of which are found in Molinaro’s celebrated collection, Intavolatura di Liuto, which he published in 1599. O’Dette’s technique, which has received high praise around the world in many concert and recording reviews, is in fine form here: even in the most difficult passages, where it seems that two lutes must be playing, he brings out every line in clear detail, complete with phrasing that allows us to pick out the rise and fall of melodies while preserving rhythmic drive and harmonic integrity. He’s aided by a complementary sonic environment--the ideal acoustics of Quebec’s Le Domaine Forget, a favorite venue of the orchestra Les Violons du Roy--and by what seems a sincere desire to bring this relatively unknown music to our attention. (You may recognize one of the pieces: the Ballo detto il Conte Orlando appears in Respighi’s Ancient Airs & Dances.)
