Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is easily the best release in Andrew Litton’s Mendelssohn symphony cycle with the Bergen Philharmonic. The orchestra plays splendidly and the sonics are excellent (though the “Italian” is very slightly less vivid than the other two works). Mendelssohn’s First Symphony remains strangely neglected in the concert hall; it’s just as good as his later efforts, and even larger in scale than the “Italian”. Perhaps the lack of a nickname accounts for its neglect. Whatever the reason, it’s beautifully done here, a performance brimming with vigor but also sensitive to the many delightful touches of color, particularly from the woodwinds. The same observation holds true in the overture and the Fourth Symphony. Litton’s opening movement is as Read more sunny and bright as one could ask, and in the finale he points the Saltarello rhythms so as to create maximum energy without pushing the music to the point of hysteria. A terrific release.

My Favorite of Mendelssohn May 19, 2012 By Richard H. (Glendale, AZ) See All My Reviews "I have heard many recordings of Mendelssohns symphonies and I like this one the best. I think this is the first time I have heard such brisk rythms with these works but I really like them. The overture is just as good as the symphonies too!" Report Abuse
