Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is a program for the late evening. Mompou is like a Spanish Satie, but never seeking to shock, always to beguile the ear.

The record devoted to the music of Federico Mompou is particularly welcome as most of this repertoire is not otherwise represented in the catalogue. The recital is shared by two pianists, Gonzalo Soriano, who plays the eight delightfully intimate Canciones y danzas, and Carmen Bravo (what a name!) who offers the Suburbis ("Slum dwellings"), Escenas de niños ("Children's scenes"), Fiestas lejanas ("Faraway feasts"), Pessebres ("Nativity scenes", although the usage here indicates the small figurines favoured to simulate the crib of Jesus), and
Read more Paisajes ("Landscapes"). Mompou's sound world is delicate and unspectacular. In some ways he is like a Spanish Satie, but without the grotesquerie and he never seeks to shock, always to beguile the ear. This is a programme for the late evening. The playing here has not quite the individuality and distinction of Larrocha, but it is thoroughly musical and the quiet delineation is in keeping with the music's spirit. The last of the Suburbis, "L'homme de l'aristo" ("The organ-grinder") is a gentle portrait, entirely without gaudiness, the six vignettes which make up the Fiestas lejanas, are little more than scenic echoes, the portrayal of children is never really boisterous. The Pessebres include two of the most haunting pieces—"La ermita" (in fact a gracious simulation of the image of the composer's father, the painter, José Mompou) and "El Pastor" ("The shepherd"). Perhaps most engag ing of all are the two closing landscapes, "The fountain and the bell" and "The lake", both showing the composer at his most economically descriptive. These are early recordings (1958) but they sound very well indeed and the CD transfers are particularly successful, bringing a full, warm sonority which is so essential in this unassertive writing. A generously filled record: not to be missed.
