Notes and Editorial Reviews

In the slow movement of the Brahms Violin Concerto, Menuhin handles the notes as Keats handles words.

The ambience of the Grünewald Kirche, Berlin conveys a fine body of tone to the Berlin Philharmonic and is flattering to the soloist. The performance is quite marvellous, demonstrating Menuhin's nobility of line at its most impressive: the reading has breadth, humanity and spontaneity.

...[T]he reading [of the Haydn Variations] is traditional in tempi, exemplary in execution (vintage Philharmonia strings and solo winds). It is a reading, under a conductor who was once a viola-player, which looks to the middle and lower reaches of Brahms's sonic spectrum, reining the quick tempi sufficiently to allow Brahms to put his feet down with unerring confidence. Thus, though the reading may lack something of Toscanini's inimitable frisson, it is noble and compelling none the less, with a splendid sense of unfolding, culminating in a deeply satisfying statement of the finale.
