Last of the generation where the dual role of composer and conductor was considered obligatory, Strauss not only shows us his vision of his own work, but also his take on overtures from operas by Wagner, Weber, Gluck, Cornelius, and Mozart. His versions of Mozart and Gluck are wildly romantic, with stormy shifts in tempo and dynamics. This is no longer considered appropriate for interpretations of 18th-century music, but it is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the progression of 18th to 20th-century conducting.
In the 20th century, the tradition of composers conducting and interpreting their own works all but died out. It is a sad product of romantic absolutism, and a pity. Here is a unique opportunity to hear Strauss'
Read more rendition of the "Dance of the Seven Veils" from 'Salome' and 'Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche.' The Berlin Philharmonic, as staunchly virtuosic as ever, puts on solid performances. The sound, though limited by the technology of 1928, is relatively clear. Read less
