Notes and Editorial Reviews

...DG...should be heartily congratulated for employing such a strong roster of singers and the highest editorial and recording standards. ... de rigeur for collectors.

-- Christopher Webber, www.zarzuela.net

-------------

[El bateo] is amongst [Chueca's] most endearing and inexhaustible. The new DG features a top quality cast, with Bayo and Lanza on notably good form, and given the excellent documentation, clear recording and complete texts in Spanish and English it becomes a clear first choice...

THE BEST EVER May 24, 2016 By Jose A. (Brooklyn, NY) See All My Reviews "As Mr Cincinnati chotisero says this is an amazing recording of my favorite zarzuela ever .... usually in the previous recordings only 10 numbers where recorded .. even the last Placido Domingo one , has 11 only ... this one has 19 ... totally complete ... I had to edit the order of the tracks , bcos the never recorded before ones come as appendixes but with number ... so I placed them all where they belong ... I've never had such an amazing experience listening to this zarzuela .... for example the Ratas Jota , is always sung by regular singers .. here there's 3 professional singers ... the Tango de Doña Virtudes is amazinly taken by a contralto , instead of a regular tiple as is always presented ... etc.. is the ideal versión , with all the intermezzos wich none of them are in any other recordings .... at the end of this one ... starts El Bateo .. by Chueca also ... the music is so similar as composition that bcos of all the extra numbers etc... you wont even notice the change from one work to another .. must also be the efecto of being the same orchestra .. conductor and singers ..... is an absolute perfect combination of complete recordings of this 2 titles ... yes, people interested only into the Gran Via work , are gonna have the most delightful experience ... of course you need to speak spanish to understand the fun of this Works ... if you have to read a translation , yes .. the music specially to me that i was raised in Madrid and La Gran Via is an Avenue where everybody goes ... explains a lot .. el Eliseo is still a dance hall , artistic lectures and small concertos building.. Caballero de Gracia is a Street Crossing La Gran Via ... yes .. pick pockets at that time where called ratas and even now one still can hear that name refering to pickpockets .... Marineritos is the uniform school kids used to wear by then ... fountains where removed to open way to the Gran Via construction ... Menegilda y Doña Virtudes sing with Madrid chulapo accent ... this may be the most verismo work ever ... now that i thnk about it ... just that is in operetta alike tunes all of Spaniard origen ...... is a studio recording wich adds 100 to the whole goodness excelent 24bit/96Hz sound ..... if someone wants to get introduced to Zarzuela ... up to me this is the best work to catch the sense of what Zarzuela is ..."  F. Chueca: La Gran Via and El Bateo November 24, 2012 By Peter Barlow (Pawcatuck, CT) See All My Reviews "This is one of the best zarzuela CDs I've heard. Zarzuelas are Spanish operettas but not widely known outside of Spain. If you like Offenbach, Strauss, Lehar, and Smetana you will love this. Everything here is perfect - the music, the performances, and the recording. And Maria Bayo is always wonderful. My only criticism is that the cover design of the CD and booklet is not very interesting and the printing on the cover is barely legible. But don't let that keep you from this marvelous music."
