Notes and Editorial Reviews

ANTICO/MODERNO Skip Sempé (hpd); dir; Capriccio Stravagante (period instruments) PARADIZO 8 (66:24 Text and Translation)

Madrigals of PALESTRINA, RORE, SANDRIN, ARCADELT, LASSUS

The subtitle of this program is “Renaissance Madrigals Embellished,” a collection of the diminution repertoire that, as ensemble director and founder Skip Sempé says in a printed interview, was only miraculously written out or prepared Read more for publication at all. The instrumental embellishments that are presented here are credited to Francesco Rognoni, Richardo Rognioni, Diego Ortiz, Vincenzo Ruffo, Jan of Lublin, Girolamo dalla Casa, Giovanni Battista Spadi, Bartolomeo de Selma y Salaverde, and Andrea Antico, not to mention several that were prepared for the recording by Doron Sherwin, another member of the ensemble. Of the 21 tracks, five are recorder consort or viol consort versions of the original piece.

Sempe also explains what diminution means, useful for most of us. It consists of ornamenting an existing melody, usually on top or bottom, a practice that was inspired by the development of new musical instruments, the ones often referred to as Baroque instruments. This modern (for its time) approach to older music gives the disc its title. To say any more would be to copy the entire interview, which gives a fascinating insight into Sempé’s approach to performance. At six pages of legible type, it backs up everything that is heard on the disc. Just to clarify, there are no vocal tracks on this disc; other recording artists have provided the original madrigals, frottole, and chansons. Sempé plays the harpsichord and virginals, joined by a dozen other instrumentalists, but no one is singled out as leader. This disc occupies a special niche.
