Notes and Editorial Reviews
If your taste is for succulent Viennese delicacies with which to pander to a sweet tooth, this could be just the thing for you. The soft centre is a selection of 11 of Kreisler’s arrangements and original compositions, decked out here with appropriate orchestral accompaniments. His arrangement of a Viennese melody by Eduard Gartner is new to me; but otherwise the selection includes all of the obvious items, including the three ‘Old Viennese Dances’ and a particular favourite of mine – the Rondino on a theme by Beethoven – which the notes aptly suggest was based on a melody that Beethoven never got around to composing. The collection ends with a similarly succulent arrangement of Sieczynski’s Wien, du Stadt meiner Traume, preceded by a

somewhat incongruously solemn piece that Johann Strauss composed for his stepdaughter’s wedding.
The real joy of the collection lies in the three Lehar compositions with which it begins. The youthful Concertino and the Hungarian Fantasy have been recorded before – the former an enjoyably lithe if not terribly memorable miniature concerto, the latter a typically lively selection of Hungarian gipsy violin airs that should be heard more frequently. But I have never previously heard the polka Vergissmeinnicht, and it turns out to be an utterly enchanting trifle and, for me, the chief joy of the disc. The violinist Robert McDuffie is a newcomer to me, but he plays throughout with polish and refinement. A wholly delicious concoction!
