Notes and Editorial Reviews

English Baroque Soloists/John Eliot Gardiner. (Originally released on Erato 4509-91800-2 [2 CDs] recorded January, 1983)

The English Baroque Soloists are a virtuoso period band, wonderfully well recorded here, and Gardiner elicits readings from them that are masterfully shaped and inflected, full of resilience, energy, and life. These are foot-tapping performances, as earthy as they are courtly, and unmatched in their richness and piquancy of sound. What is notable, in addition to the wonderful pointing of rhythm, is the real expressiveness of the playing. - Ted Libbey

Excellent Brandenburg set! April 9, 2019 By Gail M. (Goleta, CA) See All My Reviews "John Eliot Gardiner usually seems to add lyricism and musicality to whatever piece he supervises, and that is true here. The English Baroque Soloists, led by their concertmaster Kati Debretzeni, play the tricky opening to Concerto no. 1 with accurate balance, and the adagio oi that concerto has real beauty. The precision of these performances brings out interesting counterpoint - sometimes it's striking. Recorded sound is unusually vivid. I think this is one of the very best sets of Brandenburg Concerti now available. The disks may be difficult to remove from the envelopes in this booklet; I keep them in separate CD jewel cases."
