of the label, as they did with the Klara label earlier. Giulio Caccini and Sigismondo d’India are the main composers heard here, but nine instrumental pieces out of the 22 tracks are credited to the others listed above. Only 13 tracks are sung, including one anonymous setting, but these include such familiar pieces as Caccini’s
Amarilli mia bella
and d’India’s
Lamento d’Olimpia
. Caccini’s
Tutto’l di piango
was included in the most recent collection of his works (Alpha, reviewed elsewhere), while d’India’s setting of the same Petrarch poem was heard in an earlier collection of his music (16:5). The two settings follow one after the other here, but both previous recordings were rendered by male voices, Marco Horvat and Nigel Rogers, respectively.
Feldman and the two players have assembled a program of the great Italian poetry put to music by the two principal composers (and the single anonymous), spaced out by instrumental pieces by their contemporaries. The poets are Petrarch, Tasso, Guarini, Rinuccini, and Chiabrera. The last, the least recognizable name, was born a little before Rinuccini and died at the age of 86 in 1638. Does the “great Italian poetry” include the text of Olympia’s lament written by d’India himself? Once recorded by Emma Kirkby (10:4), it is still a selection worthy of inclusion here. Altogether, this is a lovely musical event that will charm its hearers.
