Challenging Chamber Music From Northeast Europe July 21, 2012 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "In this demanding disk, BIS presents a set of modern chamber music compositions from Estonia. In addition to a rigorous listening experience, the recording provides a means of exploring a musical language that derives legitimacy due to its geographical separation from the traditional European cultural core area that we know. Eduard Tubin's excellent string quartet contains simple, direct thematic material, giving the impression of sparseness and austerity as its fundamental aesthetics. The Elegy, a short and introspective piece, is followed by Tubin's one-movement Piano Quartet, an excellent piece of noticeable complexity with serious, starkly powerful themes. Next, the listener encounters the dramatic string quartet of Erkki-SvenTuur. The rhythmic, pulsating start to the first movement leads to a highly dissonant development passage and ultimately to a reintroduction of the initial themes in an altered, dissonant mode. The longer second movement structurally follows the first- alternating passages of raw dissonance with compact, intensely pulsating power. Tuur does somehow find a way out of this wilderness with a satisfying resolution to what has to be considered a complex and very worthwhile string quartet. The disk concludes with a work entitled 'Fratres' by Arvo Paart. This composition has appeared in several forms (e.g.- string orchestra, massed cellos, and in this case string quartet). Minimalist in nature, it uses a constantly repeating theme, with slight variations in volume and tempo providing the work's deliberately limited diversity. In all of these compositions, the Tallinn Quartet plays with conviction and passion, and the sound is fully up to BIS's high standards. Make no mistake- this music is NOT Haydn or Mozart; look elsewhere if you are seeking gentleness, order, and delicacy. For those with an adventurous spirit, however, this is a truly remarkable and rewarding recording, and I can easily recommend it." Report Abuse
