Notes and Editorial Reviews

An extremely well recorded collection of an American composer (and concert pianist) whose music was firmly established in a European romantic style.

Henry Holden Huss has received a bit of attention recently with the recording of his Piano Concerto on Hyperion (in their Romantic Piano Concertos series). Henry Holden Huss was born in Newark, New Jersey on June 21, 1862, but when he was two his family moved to New York City, where he became a life-long resident. Oliver Holden (1765-1844), the prolific colonial composer best known for his hymn tune Coronation was related to him. His father, George was also a composer, church Organist and music teacher who was his son's first teacher. Of his early training, Huss once said,
Read more "You see I began to study music almost in the cradle. My father was intent upon my musical education, and I remember being taken by him to call upon Anton Rubinstein. He knew my father well, and he also knew that I had been set apart for a musical career." From 1882 to 1885 Huss studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Munich. His principal teachers were Josef Giehrl (piano), a pupil of Liszt, and Josef Rheinberger (Organ, composition). While in Munich, he made his debut in the Beethoven G Major Concerto and had his first Orchestral work performed. Upon his return to New York City in the fall of 1885, he resumed his career as a private teacher and continued to build a career as a concert pianist. During the 1887 American debut recital series of Josef Hofmann, themes for improvisation were provided by Walter Damrosch and Huss. In 1891, Tchaikovsky arrived in the City to help dedicate Carnegie Hall and Huss was part of the hospitality committee as well as the pianist in the performance of the Tchaikovsky A Minor Trio. Two years later, he assisted Dvorak in a lecture-recital to discuss the latter's New World Symphony. He also concertized in the area around his summer home on Lake George. In 1904, he performed in the White House for President and Mrs. Roosevelt. He taught at Hunter College and The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York. During the Depression, he was active in the Federal Music Project of the Works Progress Administration. On June 23, 1953 he gave his final known performance in a birthday tribute broadcast on WNYC. He died in New York City on September 17, 1953. The piano recital contained on this disc is a most pleasant affair which makes a good introduction to the composer.
