Notes and Editorial Reviews

The members of Piffaro are masters of all they play and purvey, bringing much cheerful noyse.

If you thought that the sounds of those exotic winds of the renaissance, the bagpipes, sackbut, crumhorn and shawm, with their colourful supporting cast, had all but disappeared with David Munrow, be assured - they are once again with us, and there is more to come. In fact Piffaro (originally the Philadelphia Renaissance Wind Band) have been active in the USA since 1980.

In their programme of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Italian music interest is constantly maintained, not only by the variety of the music itself but, no less, by the impressive battery of instrumental sounds and their traditional contrasting
Read more subdivision into 'loud' and 'soft', suited to outdoor and indoor use respectively but here 'equalized' in the recording studio. The early revival of these instruments was often attended by the meagre ability of their players, giving them a bad name once the novelty had worn off, but the members of Piffaro are masters of all they play and purvey.

The programme, a treat for jaded ears (or even those which aren't), introduces numerous items and a few composers to the present Gramophone Classical Catalogue, not to mention much cheerful noyse.
