Gustav Holst's name is so closely connected with his orchestral masterpiece 'The Planets' that most listeners are unaware that he wrote operas. Holst wrote nine operas and four ballets: unfortunately, with the exception of 'Savitri,' none of these works were well received during the composer's lifetime.
'The Wandering Scholar' was written in 1929-30 and set to a libretto by Clifford Bax, based on a tale taken from Helen Waddell's classic study of the same name. Holst's opera is brief, only twenty-five minutes long, but filled with concise, tightly constructed melodies that bristle with earthy humor. 'At the Boar's Head' is, of course, based on an episode from Shakespeare's play 'Henry IV, Part I' and focuses on the characters, Falstaff and Prince Hal. Holst's score is a bawdy, rough-hewn delight, filled with tunes from English folksongs. Both operas receive definitive performances with such stalwarts of English opera as Michael Rippon, Robert Tear, Philip Langridge and Felicity Palmer singing key roles. This recording is ideal for introducing yourself to a highly engaging side of Gustav Holst.
