Notes and Editorial Reviews

Mussorgsky's solo piano work Pictures at an Exhibition languished in obscurity for decades since it was infrequently performed. While Toushmalov orchestrated eight of the pictures in 1892 and Sir Henry Wood prepared an orchestration sometime after that, it was not until 1922 when something miraculous occurred. Serge Koussevitsky suggested to Maurice Ravel that he should score the entire work from start to finish. Familiar with Mussorgsky's style, having collaborated on an orchestration of his opera Khovanshchina with Igor Stravinsky for Diaghilev and the Ballet Russe some years previously, Ravel was at work on his own opera L'Enfant et les sortileges when he accepted Koussevitsky's suggestion. Ravel created an orchestral showpiece, even Read more going so far as to interpolate the "Promenade" theme into "The Great Gate of Kiev" as part of the stirring conclusion. On May 3, 1923, Koussevitsky conducted the world premiere of Ravel's orchestration in Paris. During his first season as Boston's music director, Koussevitsky conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the orchestration's American premiere on November 7, 1924. Through Ravel's orchestration, Mussorgsky's composition finally received the attention it deserved - including increased performances of his original version for piano solo. Read less
