Notes and Editorial Reviews

After the project of a Requiem in honor of Rossini's death, which was to be written by Verdi together with the most famous Italian composers, had failed, a new occasion soon presented itself; when Allessandro Manzoni, whom Verdi had always held in high esteem, died, the composer completed his Requiem and dedicated it to the memory of the great poet. The world premiere took place under the direction of the composer in Milan on May 22nd, 1874 and was a great success. All the singers were closely connected with the world premiere of "Aida." "An opera in a clerical robe," was the verdict of Hans von Bulow. Others called it "Verdi's greatest opera." As a bonus, we have a fine performance of the Tchaikovsky from early on in von Karajan's career.
