The works of Elliott Carter, Gunther Schuller and Charles Wuorinen represent the peak of later 20th century American composition. This recording presents songs by each composer set to such diverse poets as Walt Whitman, Hart Crane, Robert Frost, Dylan Thomas and 8th century Chinese poet, Li-Tai-Pei.
Elliott Carter is arguably the dean of American composers. His 'Frost Poems' were written between 1942 and 1945 and are notable for their simple (by Carter's standards) musical language and shifts in mood. Charles Wuorinen has ambitiously set Dylan Thomas's 'A Winter's Tale' in his own iconoclast style. A richly textured work, Wuorinen admirably captures the solitude of Thomas's text.
