Notes and Editorial Reviews

Don't let the somewhat forbidding fluorescent tones of the cover photo fool you, what's going on inside is warm and friendly. Long ago, Jascha Heifitz appropriated the music of George Gershwin for fiddlers everywhere and more recently Itzhak Perlman did the same with Scott Joplin's rags. Leila Josefowicz has assembled those arrangements, along with four original rags by John Novacek and a smattering of sentimental favorites such as Steven Foster's "Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair," Manuel Ponce's "Estellita" and "Smile" by that famous (but English, after all) composer Charlie Chaplin, to create an agreeable program of light classical music played with enthusiasm, wit and warmth. Most amusing is the 'Souvenir d'Amerique' of the great Read more Belgian violinist Henri Vieuxtemps, which takes 'Yankee Doodle' for a most elegant spin and provides Josefowicz with an opportunity for some real fancy fingerwork.
