Notes and Editorial Reviews

The choice of a trumpeter in a recital of operatic arias is both a specialist and a certain kind of popular one. Maurice Andre is very persuasive in the opening Queen of Night's Aria from Die Zauberflöte and indeed in all the coloratura arias (notably the Bell song from Lakmé, and the Doll song from Les conies d'Hoffmann) the easy exuberance and pointed articulation are easy to respond to. Yet a soupy chorus added to Bellini's "Casta diva" brings a curious sort of compromise, and "Che gelida manina" from La bohéme could hardly be less suited to a brass instrument. But if you want this kind of thing it is technically flawless, the recording is digitally vivid and present and there is a great deal of it. Read more
