Notes and Editorial Reviews
It happens that as time passes the emotional importance of events declines. We, perplexed on the one hand by the fear of this happening and on the other by an obscure, tragic awareness that it is all inevitably beyond us, seek a defence: we force the experience to be constrained thought so that memory may dominate and defend, paradoxically petrifying the very elements which would enable us to share still in a vital evolution of the experience. And so we force ourselves to exit from the fact right in the act of defending it.
