Notes and Editorial Reviews

The songs in The Tempest have always attracted composers. While many musicians since the 17th century have set them, James Primosch's Songs and Dances from the Tempest is the first using the instruments of Shakespeare's time. He succeeds in using the instruments in a manner appropriate to their techniques and timbres, without making them sound stylized and quaint. The instruments highlight settings of some of the greatest poetry in the play, as well as texts probably sung in the original staging. James Primosch has studied with John Harbison and since 1988 has served on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania, where he directs the Presser Electronic Music Studio. Most of the 17th century music heard on this recording is from the Read more "operatic" adaptation of The Tempest by Thomas Shadwell, first staged in 1674. The music for this splendid production survives almost intact. As was typical for theatrical productions, many composers were responsible for the music. Most of it is by two composers, Matthew Locke (and possibly his student, Robert Smith) and John Banister, but there are contributions by at least three others. Read less
