Highly enjoyable February 10, 2013 By James Carleton (Camarillo, CA) See All My Reviews "I bought this disc purely because I greatly enjoy music for two pianos, or piano, four hands, and I figured that this couldn't be too off-the-wall, Arensky being a Russian Romantic solidly in the Tchaikovsky "school" with touches of The Mighty Handful here and there. I have since played this disk more than a few times, and have found little nuggets of pianistic silver on each listening. There are no grand melodies in here (although the occasional harmonic "quirk" keeps things interesting), just lots of very enjoyable music, several steps above the "salon", although why folks would shy away from "salon music" is beyond me. If you enjoy Medtner's or Rachmaninoff's music for two pianos, you will like this, too. The performances are stylish: the performers seem to have studied the works in some depth, and spent much time practicing them, working on the proper mood for each one. Excellent engineering, as well. My only real quibble is the price: Hyperion tends to push the "retail envelope" farther than almost any other recording company :-(" Report Abuse
