Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Franck Symphony receives a fine, well-reasoned account, powerful and unsentimental. The opening phrase is predictably slow. It is not unlike Giulini's late DG recording, though it lacks the Italian maestro's conviction. Celibidache gets the tempo relationships between the work's sections absolutely right, and his care for detail and dynamics informs and elucidates every phrase. Even more impressive, he maintains the tension of the line across subtle tempo and dynamic changes, achieving an almost balletic grace in the famous slow movement.

Celibidache's curiously impersonal Franck is followed by a performance of Hindemith's Mathis der Maler Symphony ablaze in power and glory. It says much about this contradictory artist
Read more that he misses the unusually obvious emotional shape of the Franck but finds magic in the counterpoint of Hindemith. The sheen of gold permeates this performance. Every note counts, every phrase and inner voice makes sense. I have been enjoying the powerful and dramatic live Bernstein New York Philharmonic account recently released as Bernstein Live. Celibidache surpasses Bernstein's exultant drama and adds a sublimity of details. The opening of the final "Temptation of St. Anthony" has a savagery well in tune with the Saint's harsh personal regimen. Celibidache makes this movement sound like a personal meditation on good and evil.
