With this release, the historical vocal collector will ascend to Heaven. Here is a beautifully presented package, with detailed notes about all the singers and the music. It truly does present a cross section of operatic musical life in Munich over a forty-five year period. The inherent time span limitation is not due to the immanent criteria of Munich's operatic history as such which dates back to the 17th century but is, instead, related to external conditions. Nevertheless, two important and subsequently influential events of Munich opera history are closely linked to these two benchmark dates: the opening of the Prince Regent Theater on August 20, 1901 and the bombing of the National Theater on October 3, 1943 - a theater inaugurated in 1818, destroyed by fire in 1823 and rebuilt in 1825.
