Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is a remarkable CD that collects a variety of undeservedly overlooked piano works from the mainstream of American piano composition. Paul Creston's vigorous Piano Sonata has a fresh immediacy that is well-served in the hands of Tatjana Rankovich. Most notable are the Scarlatti-like runs and patterns that dominate the work's first movement, as well as the Andante with its gently swaying rhythms that bring Chopin to mind. Creston's Preludes display the composer's fascination with intricate rhythmic structures. Always melodic and emboldened by elaborate syncopations, these little jewels ought to become concert favorites. Vittorio Giannini's Piano Sonata is an exuberant work that is long overdue for a rediscovery. Turbulent and spiked with Read more mild dissonances, it is a striking work full of dark hues and ornate flourishes. Nicolas Flagello's two Waltzes are charming miniatures; the first is pervaded by a Ravelian gracefulness while the second has a fiery intensity that suggests Liszt rather than Chopin. Flagello's Piano Sonata is a dark work that is punctuated by exciting outbursts of impetuous romanticism. This is certainly one of the most demanding in the literature and in the hands of Rankovich it has finally received its definitive recording. Read less
