Notes and Editorial Reviews

In Fanfare 21:6, I reviewed two earlier releases in the ongoing Hänssler "Classic Schubert" series involving the German ensemble known as the Verdi Quartet, which was founded in 1985. The present volume shares the virtues of its predecessors. The playing is consistently excellent, and the ambience is that of a concert presentation, recorded at a decent distance. All works are given complete, but the "Quartettsatz" receives only the "standard" reading; although there is plenty of unused space on this release, the Verdi Quartet does not include the fragmentary (41-measure) second movement, marked Andante, that comes with the Leipzig Quartet's absolutely complete recorded edition of Schubert's surviving music Read more for string quartet (and then some). If one is seeking an integral compilation, the Leipzig ensemble's MDG series is the only viable option at present. (Prospective purchasers should however note that the couplings are not the same.) That said, these fairly recent performances from the Verdi Quartet, recorded in coproducer Deutschland Radio's Cologne (or, if you prefer, Köln) studios in December 1997 and March 1998, more than hold their own against the competition and will surely give listeners considerable pleasure.
