Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Hilliard Ensemble are on their finest form, showing in the sacred works a linear control that few other groups can challenge and giving the secular pieces an uncommon range of colours.

When this first appeared...there was very little Josquin available on record. The intervening five years have seen an astonishing change, with a large number of his Mass cycles, his entire three-voice works and nearly all of the significant motets issued in mostly excellent performances. But the singing and the musicianship here still mark this as a record of major importance: the Hilliard Ensemble are on their finest form, showing in the sacred works a linear control that few other groups can challenge and giving the secular pieces
Read more an uncommon range of colours. For what it may be worth, Josquin scholarship now is tending to reject three of the motets here (that is, all but Ave Maria ... virgo serena) as by other composers; but they remain wonderful pieces, eminently worth having in these eloquent performances.
