Notes and Editorial Reviews

You've got to love a guy who can swing with the music of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Johann Sebastian Bach. Johann Sebastian Bach? Yes, Bach. This collection features the sterling trumpet playing of Wynton Marsalis in works by Classical composers, spanning nearly three centuries.
Marsalis shows off his amazing technique in everything he plays but really shines in music of the Baroque. He effortlessly fires off the fiendishly high trumpet part from Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No.2," seemingly without coming up for air. More Baroque fireworks are launched skywards as Marsalis is joined by soprano Kathleen Battle in the aria "Let the Bright Seraphim" from George Frideric Handel's 'Samson.'
It is not all Baroque
Read more pyrotechnics however. Marsalis is also able to muster tenderness and grace in a moving rendition of the famous Irish tune, " 'Tis The Last Rose of Summer." The collection is rounded out with music by 20th-Century composers Leonard Bernstein, Henri Tomasi and a memorable performance of "The Prayer of St. Gregory" by Alan Hovhaness. Read less

Unsurpassed Trumpet Virtuosity October 29, 2013 By Anthony S. (St. Petersburg, FL) See All My Reviews "I puurchased this CD as a gift for my nine year old granddaughter who has just started trumpet lessons. I have not heard the whole CD but have listened to many of the selections via FM radio. I thought Wynton's playing might be an inspiration for this young lady who has taken a great liking to her new instrument. My only worry was that it would present too much of a challenge, but this has not been the case. Luckily Wynton combines great virtuosity with extreme musical sensitivity, and this is picked up by music lovers of any age. So, my granddaughter says A+ and her dedication to the trumpet has remained steadfast." Report Abuse
