Notes and Editorial Reviews

Edwin London's Cleveland Chamber Symphony maintains a lively commissioning program and here is the second disc devoted to music he has premiered with them. The theme is music by African-American composers with a strong emphasis on symphonic jazz. Within that general description the five composers represent a highly diverse view of both jazz and symphonic music ranging from the traditions of Gershwin and Ellington, as heard in the work of Wendell Logan, to the avant-garde work created by violinist Leroy Jenkins. Dolores White writes in an extended impressionist style with only distant echoes of jazz, full of color and considerable drama. T. J. Anderson is more devoted to expressionism and transitory effects. Conversely David Baker's idiom Read more will remind many listeners of film music in its melodic qualities and scoring.
This is a challenging and interesting program of new American music, a testimony to the continuing curiosity of Mr. London. Read less
