Notes and Editorial Reviews

Pianist Richard Goode is known for his concise and affecting performances of the three Bs (Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms). His scholarly musicianship is perfectly suited for this music, and it is no surprise that Goode turns in a highly entertaining and thoughtful recording of three Partitas by Bach. Bach wrote many sets of pieces in the "suite" format, using all of the dance forms and meters of his day. He wrote six suites specifically called Partitas, of which Nos. 2, 4 and 5 are represented on this recording. The second and fourth begin with similar grand overture movements--majestic, slow, and of great intensity--that are usually followed by a quick, melodic movement. This is the case for the fourth Partita, but Bach inserts a slow Read more section in the second Partita before launching into the fast, lyrical Allemande. Goode's delicate sense of timing illuminate both the grandiosity and ensuing insistence, and it is his approach to this music's architecture that is so rewarding. The fifth Partita, in the key of G major, is the most carefree of the three on the disc: the Passepied and Gigue are light, whimsical, and convey both the composer's sense of humor and Goode's unique delivery.
