Notes and Editorial Reviews

One of the great virtues of the Hyperion Schubert Edition is to remind listeners of the diversity in Schubert's massive output of vocal music. This has become more noticeable as the series has expanded to include all of the accompanied part songs as well as selected works for unaccompanied voices when they complete the series of settings of a particular text. Billed as an 1816 Schubertiade, Volume 32 of the Hyperion Schubert Edition completes the songs composed in 1816. The present recording fields no less than 20 singers plus chorus in a variety of combinations. The selection of material is extremely diverse. Among the works heard here are an old-fashioned ceremonial piece written to celebrate the golden jubilee of Schubert's composition Read more teacher, Antonio Salieri, as well as a rare setting of Metastasio, sung by Ann Murray, another aspect of Salieri's influence on Schubert.
In addition to much rare music and the return of many distinguished singers from earlier volumes, several new singers make important debuts in the series. Most noticeable are tenors Toby Spence and Christopher Maltman; Maltman is assigned 'Der Wanderer,' the only famous number included here. This is another important contribution to Schubert on disc.
