TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 6, “Pathétique.” Marche slave Yehudi Menuhin, cond; Royal PO ROYAL PHILHARMONIC 28110 (54:38)

Part of the Royal Philharmonic’s audiophile collection, this disc contains a restless rendition of the “Pathétique” Symphony that I find interesting even when I am not entirely convinced by an occasional impetuous gesture. The explosiveness of the trumpets in the first movement—the Read more marking is un poco animando— is startling, perhaps over-recorded, and the brief acceleration seems a tad excessive. That is the kind of nit-picking objection I have to a performance that is generally exciting and musical. Menuhin doesn’t so much build tension as let it erupt. He doesn’t wallow in the romance either. When the music is relaxed, it could hardly be lovelier. If some conductors, such as Pletnev, are able to make the piece seem less episodic, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t notice the beauty of the playing here, the playfulness of the Allegro molto vivace or the somber effectiveness of the last movement. Menuhin was, to my ears, in his later years a better conductor than he was a violinist. His Bach is extraordinary, and this Tchaikovsky disc, which includes the effective potboiler Marche slave , adds to his reputation.
