Notes and Editorial Reviews

The World Record Club has salvaged from HMV's vast discards what will be quite a treasure to some—though not all! This selection, from what was intended by Beecham as a score for a ballet called "The Great Elopement", was not received very enthusiastically when the record first appeared in October 1960. The complaints were not against either recording or performance but against the music, or to be precise against Beecham's non-Handelian arrangement of much of it. As is so often the case Beecham anticipated some such complaint, although not in reference to this particular score. A year before the first performance (in America) Beecham wrote in his autobiography (A Mingled Chime) that "there is a heretical belief in many Read more quarters that eighteenth-century composers were frail and delicate creatures who liked tenuity of sound and should be treated today with tender concern. This is against all historical evidence, particularly in the cases of Handel and Mozart, both of whom revelled in resounding splendour of tone, as we know well from the complaints of the former and the correspondence of the latter". But let us dispense with special pleading either for or against. Suffice it that Beecham has chosen pieces, mostly from forgotten stage works, and arranged them and welded them together in styles that are sometimes Handelian and sometimes far from Handelian but which I find enjoyable. May be there is as much Beecham as Handel, perhaps even more, in the final result. What of it? Handel, Bach and their contemporaries were inveterate borrowers and arrangers and did not hesitate to stamp their own personality on what they arranged and transcribed when it suited them to do so. The final answer is surely whether one enjoys the final product or not. I do.
