Carl Nielsen always had a passion for wind instruments as demonstrated by the cunning use of them in his symphonies. As for his Wind Quintet, it is full of crisp melodies, a lyrical menuet, and a parody of 18th century dances. The imperturbable humor of this 20th century chamber music classic is evident in this bustling recording by the esteemed forces gathered here.
Otto Mortensen's Quintet is also a major contribution to the wind quintet literature. Although this work is largely playful in character, it also has an inward character as well as demonstrated by the oboist Max Artved who switches to cor anglais for the beautiful and mournful third movement.
Jorgen Wiseld's Serenade is perhaps the most adventurous of the works recorded
Read more here. Boisterous and rambunctious (though tonal to its core), Wiseld has written a distinctive and challenging work that has given it a special reputation among Danish wind quintets.
Given the diverting nature of the genre, works for wind quintet have generally remained immune from the forces of modernism. Henning Wellejus's quintet from 1966 is no exception. Nary a dark moment can be found in this work of irrepressible good cheer. A fitting close for a winning CD. Read less
