Notes and Editorial Reviews

"So often people think, 'Oh, Bach is heavy music, very difficult,'" Ton Koopman is quoted as saying in the liner notes of this new CD. "But there are levels of just emotion, levels of just fun, and I hope they will say, 'My God, is that beautiful!'" Clearly, this album is aimed at those people, the ones who would shy away from a more imposing presentation of Bach. But Simply Baroque II, like its predecessor, offers a lot of loveliness to revel in, even for the most casual of listeners. I would be willing to bet that a fair number of Yo-Yo Ma's fans who pick up this recording know Koopman's name only through these collaborations. They are missing out: he is an absolutely first-rate Bach interpreter, and here shows off his Read more skills as an arranger as well.

Simply Baroque's formula is to showcase Koopman's own arrangements of Bach for solo cello and orchestra, taken from chorales and arias (most unusually, the aria from the Goldberg Variations). The prolific Bach famously recycled many of his own compositions into other arrangements, and Koopman's creations fit organically into that tradition. The performances are spot on, with the exception of a weirdly hiccupy version of the well-known "Wachet auf, uft uns die Stimme" (Sleepers, Awake!). Certainly there are few other works by Bach (or anyone else, for that matter) that have been so shamefully degraded in as many syrupy, sentimental readings, and as noble as this effort is, the urge to shake off those ghosts ultimately backfires. Overall, Ma takes well to this music, and his performances in the Bach--but particularly in the good-humored Boccherini B-flat major and D major cello concertos (with challenging cadenzas written by Koopman)--are shining, stylish, and elegant. A fine production by all concerned, one that certainly will deserve many repeated listenings.
