Notes and Editorial Reviews

In recent months I have listened with delight to recordings of neglected baroque repertoire made by William Christie's vocal and instrumental ensemble, Les Arts Florissants. Until now it has shown a predilection for French composers but here we have a selection of pieces by Monteverdi from the seventh and eighth books of madrigals. What I have admired in the past is the homogeneity of voices and instruments achieved by this group and, more specifically, the way in which singers and players strive towards the same goal. The intentions still hold good in this challenging Monteverdi programme but the ground is better trodden than that of MarcAntoine Charpentier, for instance, and there are consequently more comparisons to be drawn between this Read more performance and several existing ones. What I like very much about Christie is his freshness of outlook; he really does have something different to say about the music, and his direction is lively, articulate and authoritative. Sadly, on this occasion, however, he has not quite achieved the polished ensemble so much a feature of other recent recordings. No one can pretend that it is at all easy to capture the dramatic and harmonic subtleties of this music; Christie recognizes the pitfalls but doesn't always seem to avoid them. His singers comprise a splendid team—all unknown names to me—but they do not yet strike me as being wholly confident in their interpretation of these madrigals. Nevertheless, I find myself inclined to recommend the disc on several counts, one of which being the many passages of interpretative excellence and another being, as I said earlier, the breath of fresh air which all concerned bring to the music. The programme is well recorded, and most helpfully and generously presented with a 12-page booklet including an interesting note and full texts in Italian, English, German and French. A fascinating issue.
