BYRD Gradualia (1605): Excerpts Andrew Carwood, dir; The Cardinall’s Musick HYPERION 67675 (70:38 Text and Translation)

Volume 12 of the Byrd Edition is devoted entirely to the Marian pieces in the first book of Gradualia . It calls for comparison with an earlier disc on the same label, Gavin Turner’s “Gradualia, Volume 1” (there were no further issues), devoted to all the parts of the book that Read more were useful in singing the various feasts of the Blessed Virgin (14:5). While Turner’s William Byrd Choir sang in admirable fashion, he took advantage of what he calls Byrd’s cut-and-paste style of composition to make use of an early feature of CD players, the ability to program the tracks of a disc in any desired order. Hence he provided instructions for programming these fragments to compile four major feasts and all five votive masses, a programming task that I doubt appealed to many. Carwood simply records the music of Nativity, Annunciation, and Assumption (omitting Purification) in straightforward fashion, adding six hymns and antiphons in groups of three between the masses. These were also published in the 1605 volume, though strictly speaking they do not belong to the Gradual, or book of Mass Propers.

I listened to the Nativity of the Virgin sets on both discs in succession, since it came up first on Carwood and was fairly straightforward on Turner. Both are lovely, but I heard a softer, gentler rendition from Turner, the phrase endings tapering off more quietly. While I won’t discard the old disc, Carwood has given us a series of Byrd recordings that will be a monument when he has finished, and this is a worthy part of the series. He has averaged one disc a year, but I don’t know how much more is to come. The end must be close. Don’t wait to add this to your collection
