Notes and Editorial Reviews

A word of warning is in order. Whereas Gaité Parisienne (not quite complete) and Les syiphides (complete) get about a half hour of this disc each, only about 14 minutes are devoted to Coppélia. Of that we are given no more than the prelude and mazurka, the scene and waltz of Swanhilda and the csárdàs—only a part of the original issue. It's a pity, because the Delibes offers some of the most sensitive playing in the collection, although the csárdás is alternately eccentrically slow and outrageously fast. In the Offenbach, too, there is a hint at times that the orchestra has difficulty keeping up with Karajan's tempos. However, one is hardly likely to listen to a collection such as this with too Read more critical an ear. The fact is that the whole 28 tracks merge attractively into a rich sequence of melody, played with the rare virtuosity and brilliance for which Karajan and his orchestra are celebrated. As such it should give a great deal of real pleasure.
