Notes and Editorial Reviews

Here is a very appealing disc of contemporary music for brass quintet, containing works which are disc premieres. The Onyx Brass was formed in 1993 and since its acclaimed Purcell Room debut in 1995, under the auspices of the Park Lane Group, it has toured the length and breadth of the British Isles performing for music societies, festivals and arts associations. The ensemble has a specific commitment to the commissioning and performing of new music: audiences and critics have been particularly appreciative of their adventurous yet accessible programming, as well as the warmth and vitality of their tone. Recently they received an award from the John Tunnell Trust, the first such award for chamber music to be given to a brass ensemble. This Read more disc was recorded at All Hallows Church, Gospel Oak, London on January 24 and 25, 1998. It is good to have the Tavener and Ridout pieces on disc. The other composers are new to the catalogue. Read less
