Selections recorded November 1990 and July 1991. Part of every Italian singer's training is the so called aria antiche. These are actually opera arias from works by Pergolesi, Vivaldi and Scarlatti, among others, arranged as piano-accompanied songs. The texts are inevitably concerned with the ups and downs of love, familiar to any devotee of baroque opera. Many singers use them as the first part of their recital programs to warm their voices up and several important singers, ranging from Teresa Berganza and Alfredo Kraus to Montserrat Caballé and Renata Tebaldi, have recorded entire recitals of this repertoire. Cecilia Bartoli is somewhat unique in that she regularly performs baroque music with period instrument groups as well as being a major star in the world's great opera houses in Mozart and Rossini. She is also a wonderful recitalist in French and Italian romantic song. With her fluent technique, complete identification with whatever she is singing and beguilingly lovely voice, Bartoli offers one of the finest recitals of this repertoire in the catalog. Alternately charming, seductive or forlorn, the singer offers a captivating hour of enchantment. |
