Selections recorded April 20-23, 1997 at Wagram Hall, Paris, and July 14-15, 1997 at the Eugene Napoleon Foundation Chapel, Paris.
The early 17th century in Italy was a fascinating time and place in music history. As the Renaissance waned a school of radical harmonic theorists emerged in Rome and Naples, led by Nicola Vicentino, who espoused a dissonant, chromatic style which found its ultimate voicing in the weird madrigals of Don Carlo Gesualdo. Simultaneously in Venice Giovanni Gabrieli was writing for massed choruses and instruments to produce hitherto unimagined sonorities. So as the Baroque era dawned, the stage was set for truly "modern" music that constantly explored new techniques in the name of increased expression.

Read more the reigning genius of the period, Claudio Monteverdi gets credit for the new style almost to the exclusion of all others, but of course there were others, one of whom was the younger Sigismondo d'India. D'India, an accomplished singer, specialized in solo songs and madrigals and exemplified the fierce competitive nature found in many composers of the time, seeking to emulate and outdo his rivals with works more advanced or ingenious than theirs. His madrigals are full of dissonant surprises and his songs are quasi-operatic.
