Bizet Would Be Proud. September 1, 2012 By Richard F. Buckley (Jefferson Hills, PA) See All My Reviews "Bizet died much too young of a heart attack at the tender age of 36. He was a master, and his work is beloved by countless classical music fans. Personally, his operas, especially Carmen, are the only operas I can stand for any prolonged period of time. This disc offers a superb selection from three of his most famous works - Carmen, The Pearl Fishers and L'Arlesienne Suite No. 1. Fourteen uncut movements are included from Carmen alone. The orchestral selections feature the N.Y. Philharmonic led by Leonard Bernstein, the National Philharmonic directed by Leopold Stokowski, the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy and several other outstanding groups and leaders, Nor do the vocalists lack for talent. They are headed up by Beverly Sills, Jose Carreras, Risa Stevens, Richard Tucker and other great artists. Incidentally, Rise Stevens does a fabulous job on Habanera from Carmen, but I am being picky. All the selections are outstanding!

Unfortunately, Bizet lived just long enough to delight us with a small window of what would undoubtedly been a fantastic offering. Enjoy this disc while it is still on the market. Sony offers CDs in this series at a stunningly low price. Buy it while it is still available.
