A pupil of Anthony Woodrow at the Sweelinck Conservatory of Amsterdam, Hans Roelofsen graduated cum laude in 1977, continuing his studies with cellist Anner Bijlsma and double bass soloist of the Berlin Philharmonic Klaus Stoll. He also studied for two years in the United States with Gary Karr. In 1981, he received the Netherlands Music Award. Today, he shares the position of co-principal double bass of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. He teaches at the Rotterdam Conservatory and at the Messiaen Academy of Arnhem.
