Notes and Editorial Reviews

This set contains eight magnificent symphonies by a composer who, had he lived, could have been one of the major voices of the classical period. Kraus’ lifespan (1756-92) was almost exactly the same as Mozart’s, and to be honest, a lot of his music is every bit as good. His “Sturm und Drang” symphonies are particularly powerful—in C-sharp minor, C minor, and his gripping “Symphonie funèbre” for his patron, Gustav III of Sweden (or Boston, if you’re Verdi writing an opera about his assassination). This latter, a remarkable work by any standard, consists of four slow movements–but don’t worry, there’s plenty of contrast and two of them are quite short.

All the music here is
Read more marvelously played by Concerto Köln under Werner Ehrhardt, with crisp rhythms, sensitive balances, and plenty of contrast. As usual with “authentic” ensembles, it would be nice to hear more warmth from the strings, but the basic timbre is pleasing and the enthusiasm of the performances, to say nothing of the quality of the music itself, carries all before it. This is first rate, artistically and sonically.
