Notes and Editorial Reviews

Georges Thill was among the most French of all the French tenors. He was born in Paris where his father owned a publishing house. As a boy, he already possessed a powerful voice and often sang for his own entertainment without ever thinking seriously about a professional singing career. In a music shop, Thill used to listen to a record of Caruso with arias from Tosca and I Pagliacci until he knew the two interpretations by heart - "unfortunately, they were played at the wrong speed and I ended up singing everything one note higher than it was written. Those were my first singing lessons." Almost all the recordings Thill made of French opera can be considered definitive. To Rodolfo Celletti, the great Italian critic, the singer's complete Read more recording of Massenet's Werther for Columbia represents the ideal interpretation of the title role and he ranks the French tenor as the ideal Werther before Tito Schipa and Alfredo Kraus. Thill's charm, his effortless singing with romantic intimacy, as well as his unusually pure musical line can be counted among the tenor's main virtues. Elisabeth Schwarzkopf cites his Wagner recordings in her masterclasses as an ideal example of how Wagner should be sung. Thill's crystal-clear French diction, his impeccable taste, his elegance and his incredible variety of color and dynamic shading make him one of the greatest French singers of all time. Read less
