Notes and Editorial Reviews

The title of this CD is not misleading—Renée Fleming has a voice of unmatchable beauty, a voice with a fullness of tone in all registers. The production is effortless, the legato flawless, she always sings off the words. And so though I don't mean to sound ungrateful for such riches, I can't get through this whole CD without feeling an undertow or as if I'm being lulled into submission. Louise's ruminations are rightly sung as in a waking dream, Marguerite's wonder-loving Jewel Song and Manon's saucy Gavotte keep my interest. But the run of Martha's “Last Rose of Summer", the divine "Bel sogno di Doretta", Marietta's Lied (from Die Tote Stadt), the soprano solo from Carmina Burana, and more down-tempo, pianissimo, laid Read more back, incredibly sweet arias follow, and by the time the CD closes, with one of Canteloube's gorgeous songs, I feel as if I've been counting backward from 100, waiting to wake up in a strange place, probably without a kidney.

Yes, I know that I don't have to listen to the whole thing at once—and in bits, it's divine. But I also feel that Fleming might have given a bit more energy to the few up-tempo selections and placed a bit more personality on some of the others. But I can recommend it to anyone who appreciates superb singing and a "beautiful voice".

For lovers and even non-lovers of Opera February 14, 2012 By Peter B. (Whiting, IN) See All My Reviews "Listening to a couple of the selections,as Robert Levine all but suggests in his estimable review:"Yes, I know that I don't have to listen to the whole thing at once..." I fall in love again. Renee could sing about anything and make it beautiful but these pieces,in my opinion some of the most exquisite ever written, make this truly special." Report Abuse
