Notes and Editorial Reviews

Known for the important role he assigned to the orchestra in his operas, Britten was equally successful at wielding a large ensemble of voices, a fact that is evidenced in this collection. The dynamic potential of the chorus is wonderfully showcased in the 'Five Flower Songs', as is Britten's integrity in honoring and even enhancing material from British folk music. The endearing and familiar Britten trademarks include tricky polyrhythms, canonic construction, and close intervals, executed with beauty and purity by Finzi Singers.
Along with the folk music, there is sacred material here, which is likewise illuminated by sliding tones and other modernistic devices. A group of children's choristers widens the range of expression for "A Boy
Read more was Born," which finishes in a vivacious, demanding, and well-performed "Noel." Read less
