Notes and Editorial Reviews

Villa-Lobos isn't usually thought of as an "intellectual" composer, and this may account in some part for the neglect of his 17 string quartets, surely one of the most important series of such works written this century. And yet, in many ways he was a natural quartet musician--a cellist of distinction, possessed of a huge fund of characteristic melody, and most important of all, completely comfortable and natural in his use of counterpoint (as numerous movements in the famous Bachianas Brasileiras series demonstrate). In fact, the music his quartets resemble most is that of Bartók, although no one would compare Villa-Lobos to the great Hungarian in terms of structural rigor. Nevertheless, both composers
Read more based their mature styles on the inflections of folk music, and in both cases the results sound uncompromisingly modern. Indeed, it's the music's more acerbic qualities, perhaps, that have conspired most of all to keep it on the sidelines of the international quartet repertoire. The Cuarteto Latinoamericano owns this music, having lived with it, loved it, and performed it for years. They know how to float a tune--as in the Andante malinconico of the 12th quartet--yet manage the hyperactive music of the quicker movements with just the right combination of clarity and drive. This series is a must for chamber music lovers--an outstanding group of works by a still underrated major composer, presented in ideal performances, beautifully recorded.
