Notes and Editorial Reviews

Franz Liszt's greatest large-scale instrumental pieces include several works for organ. Two of these provide formidable bookends in this first Naxos volume of Liszt's complete organ music: namely the Prelude and Fugue on B-A-C-H, and Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen. Although Liszt made effective piano versions of both works, the sheer lungpower of the originals galvanizes Liszt's chromatic wanderlust and rhetorical dynamism. Andreas Rothkopf's freshly conceived and effectively differentiated registrations (thanks in part to the colorful choirs of the Sauer Organ at St. Petri Dom, Bremen) mirror the music's orchestral ambition, and his incisive, fluent playing sweeps the listener along for some extraordinary rides.

Three
Read more of the six Consolations for piano prove equally viable and expressive in their organ guise. So does the first St. Francis Legend, although its high register twitterings and chirpings can't help but evoke images of a circus calliope. Happily, Rothkopf's lucid, direct reading keeps the music's maudlin underbelly at bay. The sound doesn't quite match the presence and impact I enjoy in Motette's superlative engineering on a 1989 Liszt recital by Eberhard Lauer, nor Gunther Kaunzinger's competing renditions of the Evocation, B-A-C-H Prelude & Fugue, and Weinen, Klagen (on Novalis). Still, Rothkopf's virtues whet my anticipation for the next installment in this series.
